Alabama Hills Recreation Area
The Alabama Hills are filled with unique to the area rocks and rock formations, hiking trails, rock climbing, camp grounds, and ATV trails. There are several campground in the area, with dispersed camping allowed on part of Move Road Camping isn't allowed on the first 1-1/2 miles of Movie Road but there are many lovely places to camp along the rest of the road. As with all campsites however: if you pack it in, pack it out!
One of the most popular places in the area to film movies and commercials is the appropriately named Movie Road. Movie Road is a 7 mile long scenic route with innumerable offshoots leading to anything from a 4x4 trail to miniature waterfalls. Movie Road is also a great place to explore some of the many places where movies and commercials are filmed. During the Lone Pine Film Festival plaques are put up giving information about each location and what movies were filmed there. Free self-guided tour CDs can be picked up at the Film History Museum and The Chamber of Commerce.
During the spring the Alabama Hills are a wonderful place to see the hundreds of types of wildflowers in bloom. A few pop out as early as February, but prime wildflower season is usually late March - April.
The Alabama Hills are also a a fisherman's paradise! With Lone Pine Creek running the length of Whitney Portal Road, and Tutle Creek running down the other side of the hill. Both creeks are renowned places to catch Rainbow Trout. Fishing permits are available at the visitor center and the forest service.
