Past
In the early 1970’s, Mammoth Lakes was a fledgling California winter resort catering to a hardcore group of mostly weekend skiers. The town’s lodging, population and activity concentrated around the main road, which had bypassed Old Mammoth Creek Road. Then, in 1972, a German plumber named Günter Voelpel, along with his wife, Krystal, built a charming small hotel offering 23 rooms and a dormitory on a vacant parcel adjacent to National Forest Service land just a few hundred yards from beautiful Mammoth Creek. They called it “Jägerhof Lodge.” Although the inn was just a few blocks from the town center, locals thought Günter was taking quite a gamble on this “remote” location..
Thanks to their hard work and perseverance, however, Günter and Krystal proved the naysayers wrong and their labor of love prospered.
In 1975, a Scottish couple, Tony and Marie Campbell, purchased the lodge and, along with their two young daughters, settled in to its comfortable 3 bedroom apartment. Over the following 29 years, the Campbells welcomed guests from all over the world, and began a tradition of hosting groups from England and Australia. In fact, the affable couple played a significant role in the development of Mammoth Lakes as a year-round resort by initiating and promoting summer bus tours to the area. Over the nearly three decades that Tony and Marie Campbell owned the lodge, they cultivated repeat customers who became like family. Some of those customers would return every year; a few staying up to five weeks each visit.
While the Campbells cherish a wealth of memories about the lodge, they don’t recall any run-ins with traditional hotel ghosts . . . except, perhaps, the one attached to Grandma Voelpel’s pillow.
Present
The lodge’s proud new owner renamed it Mammoth Creek Inn and has carried on its tradition of comfort and congeniality while creating Mammoth’s most recently renovated and discriminating boutique hotel. The Inn now offers 26 beautiful rooms and suites just minutes from world-class winter and warm weather sports and recreation, and is convenient to all the dining, shopping and other amenities Mammoth Lakes offers.
Accommodations include comfortable single and double occupancy rooms, suites with kitchens and an expansive 1400 sq. ft. Master Loft Suite featuring a first level bedroom and bath, a Great Room with beautiful stone fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and access to the inn’s outdoor deck, and a spacious loft bedroom hosting its own private deck, sitting area and en suite full bath.
The Inn’s first floor main lobby is a warm, welcoming space with its comfortable sitting areas and large stone fireplace, while the more intimate second floor study is perfect for curling up with a good book in front of the wood burning stove. Nearby, the billiard room offers fun for all ages and skill levels.
Just a few blocks off of U.S. Highway 395 on Old Mammoth Road, the Inn provides a large, well-lighted parking area that easily accommodates motor homes and tour buses.
The Mammoth Creek Inn is the ideal destination for individuals, couples, families or groups seeking a clean, well-appointed, first-class yet moderately-priced alternative to larger, more impersonal lodges or corporate hotels.
Future
Exciting things are in the works at the Mammoth Creek Inn! Included in future plans are a gourmet restaurant and an intimate, relaxing and rejuvenating therapeutic spa. The restaurant will be small, upscale and suitable for a couple in the mood for a romantic dinner, or a family seeking a quality meal. The spa will feature pampering packages, sensual specials and custom indulgences. In addition, the Inn will offer its own shuttle, providing complimentary transportation for guests to and from the airport and other local destinations.
