TECOPA has long been a favorite winter home of miners, prospectors. and retired people. Lately a new type of prospectors the rock hound, has discovered its wonders. 'There are places In the Kingston Mountains, a few miles East-of town, where amethysts are picked out of crevices in a cliff. South of town, is Sperry Wash, where there are beds of petrified wood of a quality hard enough to polish, which gemologists claim is rarely true of petrified rock. The opal beds near the old Amargosa Borax Works have long been a favorite spot for rock hounds, and have yielded some beautiful stones. The beds near the highway are depleted, but determined prospectors are pressing further back into the hills, and are finding still more of this semi-precious gem.
